Our garage door handle is made of chrome-plated steel and is attached to the door by simple screwing. The antioxidant treatment of the steel has the advantage that it prevents the formation of rust. Furthermore, the layer of chrome protects the handle from corrosion and wear.

The handle is shiny and has high impact resistance. The lock can only be opened and closed with the designated key, so the keys do not fit into another lock of the same type. A spare key is included with our garage door handle. The total length is 170mm and the square shank is 124mm long.

Do I need a garage door handle for an electric garage door?

For garage doors without an electric drive, a garage door handle should be attached for comfortable opening and closing of the door. But even with an electrically operated garage door, a handle can be of practical use: in the event of a clamp of the emergency release, the garage door can still be used, just like in the event of power failures. In such situations, it makes sense to install a garage door handle for security.

Replacing a garage door: We'll show you how

Replacing the handle for the garage door is not difficult in itself, because the screw on the inside just needs to be loosened and then the inner and outer handle plus square shank are pulled out of the housing. However, since handles can wear out over the years, rust makes the whole thing a bit more complicated. We'll show you how you can still replace the handle without damaging the garage door.

To replace a rusty handle, you can either use asoft mallet to release the square shank from the guide or you may have to drill the lock first. To make it easier, you can spray some rust removal spray on the handle beforehand. If both the shank and the housing of the lock are corroded by rust, it must be drilled out.

In this case, you can separate the shank from the guide with a grinder or metal saw and then open it with a metal drill. Make sure that the metal drill is not too thick in diameter so that the square guide is not damaged. Finally, you can knock out the handle with a hammer. For this purpose, it is best to remove the lock housing and clamp it in a vice.
